Training for Friendly Visitors

Representatives from Toronto Public Health will present information on communicable diseases. Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS will be discussed. Harm Reduction topics including The Works' Naloxone Program (P.O.I.N.T.) will be presented. Infection Control practices will also be discussed. Anyone who tries to find a bed within the Toronto homeless shelter system is fully aware that it is in a crisis of overcrowding. During the week of January 18, OCAP members and allies visited the City warming centres and interfaith Out of the Cold shelters that function as a back up for the overloaded system. We spoke to people using these places and volunteers in them. What we found more than confirmed our worst fears. more>>

Theatre for Thought - Free University Program

Each term, Victoria University offers a free, 12-week university experience for members of the community. The programs are called Humanities for Humanity (Sept-Dec) and Theatre for Thought (Jan-Apr). Both are meant to be similar to university courses in the sense that we assign weekly readings, listen to lectures by professors, and have group discussions, but there are no assignments, exams, or grades involved. We also provide dinner, TTC tokens for getting to and from the university, and babysitting as part of the program. more>>
